It’s perfectly clear there are benefits to recycling!
As society has become more environmentally aware in recent years, our waste management habits have shifted. The average household has become more recycling-savvy, with rates increasing year on year. However, a drop in 2015, when rates slumped from 44.8% to 43.9% in England, shows how we can’t take increased awareness for granted, and must work hard to improve year on year.
Our Sugar Scientist has been looking into why recycling is key for a clean future:
- Waste not, want not – A few big-name brands have recently been criticised by trade body The Recycling Association for the number of materials used in their packaging. These products are a ‘nightmare’ for recycling machines, as it’s more difficult for the machine to separate the materials, resulting in less recycled material.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – this well-known saying sums it up nicely. By using waste in a constructive way, we can reduce the size of landfills, conserve natural resources and save energy. It’s a win-win situation all round.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions – by recycling, we can reduce air and water pollution, making the environment a cleaner place to live in.
